AN OIL SPILL that spread across two rural parishes backed up traffic yesterday as workmen from the Ministry of Transport and Works moved to head off any danger to motorists.
The workmen described the spill that touched Bawdens, Walkers and Cane Garden in St Andrew, and Ayshford, St Thomas two miles away, as the biggest they had ever seen.
The incident, said one upset motorist, caused many to have to “manoeuvre through a lot of dark holes”.
The main disruption took place at Carrington Village, St Andrew where traffic heading in the direction of that parish was diverted through Sturges, St Thomas. For more than four hours the road remained closed as workmen covered the one-mile stretch in sand to ensure that no accidents occurred.
Workmen were not sure what caused the spill but suspected it came from a big vehicle. (SDB Media)
