No cause for concern about community life

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY in Deacons Farm, St Michael is alive and well.

That is the message coming from the community organisers during a VOB Brass Tacks outreach to the area this afternoon that attracted a cross section of residents, as well as Parliamentary representative for the St Michael North West constituency Chris Sinckler.

Sinckler, who visited the outdoor broadcast, was not overly worried about the seeming decline in community activity in the urban area.

“I think that things go in waves. You have peaks and troughs and that depends [also] on the level of community leadership that you have . . . in some respects  you may not see many things that are happening as before . . .  I don’t think that you should be overly bothered or worry to panic in relation to that. There is still volleyball, football, basketball and a lot of it [sporting activity] too has spread out as opposed to being concentrated in one area.”

Sinckler, Minister of Finance in the ruling Democratic Labour Party government, also said that community work was based on volunteerism and that might affect the level of enthusiasm which was brought to the vocation.

He said getting the attention of young people was a challenge because of the technological distractions that did not obtain before.

“People [also] go in to other communities and do sports even though the same sport are being offered in their communities … it is a challenge  . . . and then of course, where many are drawn, only a few do the hard work,” said Sinckler in reference to setting up community ventures. (JS)
