Parris’ battles with banks

CLICO’S LEROY PARRIS has had battles with at least three banks which have terminated accounts belonging to him.

In 2012, Scotiabank wrote Parris and his wife informing him that the bank would be “unable to renew” the term deposit contracts with his company Branlee Consulting Services.

In May 2013, FirstCaribbean International Bank gave Parris notice of its intention to close his accounts. In an exchange of correspondence between the bank and Parris’ lawyers, Vernon Smith, QC, asked the bank to defer the closing of the accounts “so that we can continue our discussions with the Central Bank of Barbados who has been using its good offices to have the matter resolved in an equitable and amicable manner”.

FirstCaribbean gave notice that the account would be closed on November 30, 2013. A subsequent letter from the Central Bank’s corporate secretary Elson Gaskin expressed the bank’s concerns but noted that it had “no statutory jurisdiction to intervene in matters between banks and their customers”.
