PRIME MINISTER Freundel Stuart today defended his Government’s decision to make Barbadians studying at the University of the West Indies pay more towards their tuition, saying nobody should consider it unreasonable in 2015.
Delivering his Democratic Labour Party’s weekly lunch-time lecture, he said spending less on tuition gave Government the elbow room it needed to channel its funds into other areas where they were badly needed.
He told the gathering mainly of DLP members and supporters that his Government’s position on health care was the same – that those who could afford to pay would be asked to carry part of the burden.
He said asking UWI students to dig deeper in their pockets to fund their education came against the backdrop of an environment – which his party had helped create over the years – of people being better able to take care of their financial needs. (TY)
