MARK DOWELL shook off a late charge from Kevin Farley to regain the status of national champion when the National Table Tennis Championships ended at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, last weekend.
Dowell defeated the former Caribbean champion in a tense, strategic seven-game thriller 11-1, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 3-11, 11-7 in front of an appreciative crowd.
It was the first national championships played on the newly laid playing surface that was originally put down at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex for the World Cadet Challenge late last year.
Dowell dominated the first two games and though Farley managed to pull one back to reduce the deficit to just one game, his performance was far from convincing at that stage.
