St John: Good records crucial

THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH is looking to address complaints relating to the care of elderly patients.

Speaking at the opening of a workshop on Documentation in Homes for the Elderly at Southern Palms Hotel, St Lawrence Gap, yesterday morning, Chief Medical Officer Dr Joy St John said the ministry was in receipt of “several” complaints about the “less than adequate charting and documentation of patient care within our clinical geriatric setting”.

“One of our greatest challenges is the dispensing, storage and other pharmaceutical arrangement of drugs for the elderly patient.

“The standards of nursing care include the principle that any of your co-workers should be able to pick up a chart and understand the status of that patient’s condition and care,” St John said. (YB)
