Speaker of the House of Assembly Michael Carrington, seen here arriving for yesterday’s session of Parliament, opted to leave the chair temporarily to allow the Committee of Privileges to make a decision on his future.
Carrington, a lawyer and Queen’s Counsel, yesterday decided to recuse himself from the chair after the Opposition sought to draw Parliament’s attention to a High Court ruling that he must hand over nearly a quarter-million dollars withheld from a client.
The new leader of Opposition business in the House, Santia Bradshaw, who raised the issue at the start of the sitting of the House of Assembly, had listed another option for Carrington – giving Parliament details of the case – but he chose to leave the chair for the session.
Deputy Speaker Mara Thompson, who was in the chair for the remainder of the day, referred the matter to Parliament’s Committee of Privileges to make a “determination” on the future of the Speaker. (TY)
