Employees at one hotel are not too pleased with a newly introduced rule compelling them to turn in their cellphones to security before clocking in for work.
They say this “initiative” comes with no rationale/reason, and all employees have to sign an “acknowledgement” letter or risk termination. The situation has led to a lot of uneasiness since the new rule is being implemented atop mounting daily threats of termination by management, persistent harassment and in a very hostile working environment.
Staff want to know how this could be allowed to happen here.
What about workers’ rights? They are concerned about how this resort continues to treat its hard-working employees while continually boasting about the high level of service that the same staff provide.
Food scam a concern
Staff at a Government institution want the Ministry of Health to launch an investigation into the food items a local company is supplying to them.
P&S received a distress call from concerned employees complaining that on several occasions the items, mainly fruits and vegetables, were so rotten that they had to be thrown away.
They say some supervisors turn a blind eye to the situation and readily sign off and accept the produce because they have such a close relationship with the owner of the business.
Apparently, they get items for themselves either free of cost or at a substantially reduced price. One supervisor, in particular, accepts every item without question after she was able to get the boss – who by the way is not of African descent – to get building materials for her when she was constructing her home.
Staff say they usually have to pick through the items in an attempt to salvage the good ones while the cans in which canned foods come are always dented and rusty.
They want to know if it is true that this supplier takes the best items to his hotel customers while dumping the end of date produce on Government.
Staff are saying that the supervisors involved in this scam should be fired for indulging in this almost criminal act while the supplier should never be allowed to provide food to Government ever again.
City cop will be missed
The retirement of a very capable island constable has left a major void in The City.
Apparently, this tall man was well respected, especially among the taximen, not only because of his no-nonsense attitude but because he always kept visitors safe from the harassing paros.
Now that he is gone, the taximen want to know if the short island constable, who is also a hard worker, will have to patrol Bridgetown by himself and what will happen if he goes on sick leave or on holiday.
They say the other workers need to step up to the plate and realise that they also need to do some walking in the hot sun in order to keep the streets safe.
A TV essential
Is it true that a certain high-flying daughter of the soil was not too pleased when she checked into her five-star hotel on the West Coast and discovered that there was no television in her room?
And is it true that she expressed to staff that when she is paying $5 000 a night she needs to have every luxury item at her disposal.
Just goes to show that a television is definitely essential.
