A Barbadian Christmas is not complete unless the house is just right. The furniture and furnishings must be fresh and new for many.

With this in mind, Street Beat visited some upholsterers and a mattress manufacturer to see if people were turning to retail stores or were looking to have their furniture repaired or made locally.

For more than 40 years, Courtney Payne has been upholstering chairs, sofas and car seats in Eden Lodge, St Michael. He said it has been a tough year for Payne’s Upholstery but business was picking up.

“This year has been our worst,” he said. “Things are starting to pick up now but during the year, it was really rough.”
