CASTRIES – Three people have been confirmed dead after a fire broke out on Ocean Cruises’ Insignia at Port Castries this morning.

The ship came from Barbados and was heading to St Vincent next.

According to St Lucia News Online, officials said three crew members sustained severe burns while a 42-year-old man is under observation for mild smoke ingestion.

The names and nationalities of the dead were not disclosed.

The fire reportedly started in one of the ship’s four engines and all 600 passengers were evacuated. The ship had 400 crew members.

Insignia was on a ten-night cruise, which departed San Juan on December 7 and was scheduled to arrive in Miami on December 17. (NB)
