Chapel all but gone

THIS IS ALL that remains of the more than 100-year-old neo-Gothic chapel on the grounds of The Lazaretto, Black Rock.

The majority of the chapel has been demolished to make way for the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus’ Centre for African and Brazilian studies.

Principal of the campus, Sir Hilary Beckles, is on record as saying the chapel “will not be demolished and discarded by the University of the West Indies” but would be “incorporated” into the new structure.

He said the “footprint” of the chapel would be “demarcated and emblazoned into the new one, among other tangible steps being taken to maintain the cultural and historical significance of the building”.

The demolition has been denounced by officials at the Barbados National Trust and Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley. (HLE)
