The king is back on his throne.
Forty-one-year-old Barbadian jockey Patrick “Bomel” Husbands is the Champion Jockey at Woodbine Race track in Canada. Husbands opened and closed the final day’s proceedings of the season in grand style yesterday to earn his sixth title at the track.
In the opener, Husbands piloted home Phil In The Blank over five furlongs and it was time to rejoice in the very last race as he romped home aboard Rejoiceful, stopping the clock in 1:25.19 seconds. What a way to win the title.
His final tally was 170, seven more than his long-time rival, dethroned champion Luis Contreras, who needed to win more than half the day’s card or wish that somehow Husbands would endure a blank day at the office in order to win his fourth title in a row.
Contreras found himself entering the winner’s circle just once in race two aboard Simply Belonging. Husbands’ 674 mounts this season at Woodbine earned him CAN$10.6 million (BDS$18.5 million). It is the sixth time that Husbands has lifted the Woodbine jockey title having previously done so in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2008.
