Matthews off mark

The return of the king seemed more much ado about nothing.

Barbados’ best cyclist sure didn’t look it over the weekend, as the Colombia-based Darren Matthews showed clear signs of rust while failing to win any of his three road races during Saturday’s Friends of Cycling multi-race night event at The Villages, Coverley.

The much-awaited return of the talented 23-year-old was expected to be the event’s main drawing card considering Matthews last rode a competitive event back in October’s Tobago Cycling Classic.

At least he acquitted himself with a pair of podium finishes, having finished second in the keirin, which was sponsored by Williams Equipment, and third in the featured Sentry Insurance Brokers Devil Takes the Hindmost race. (JM)
