THE NATIONAL FLOWER of Barbados is the Pride of Barbados, a decorative shrub cultivated throughout the tropics.

The name Caesalpinia Pulcherrima commemorates the Italian philosopher, physician and botanist Caesalpinus.

Its common name, however, has assured it a place on the Barbados Coat Of Arms.

Over the years the Pride of Barbados was referred to by Barbadians as the Flower Fence.

It is a decorative shrub cultivated throughout the tropics, although it is claimed to have been introduced to the West Indies from the Cape Verde Islands. There is some confusion as to the origin of the plant.
