A 50-foot casuarina tree fell across Drill Hall beach, St Michael, yesterday afternoon as some tourists were sea-bathing and others lounging nearby.

However, no one was injured.

Visitor Sara Houston told the DAILY NATION she was in the sea with some other friends when the tree crashed down not far from where they were.

“We were just concerned that no one was in the area and we had not seen anyone there bathing,” she said.

A man, who gave his name as Randy, said he was also sitting in his usual spot about five feet away from the tree when it collapsed.

“I heard a loud creaking sound and I looked up at the tree and went back reading my book; then I heard another loud sound and it fell,” he said, pointing out that its roots were rotting and he suspected it would have fallen sooner rather than later.

When a NATION team visited the area, tourists were still lounging on the beach, seemingly unperturbed.

Horace Franklin, food and beverage manager at the Savannah Hotel, was on the beach getting reports of the incident from guests. (MB)
