WHO SAID the Barbados Cycling Union (BCU) can’t stage road races?
One of the region’s biggest cycling events is coming to these shores again as the Caribbean Cycling Federation (CCF) recently awarded Barbados the right to host next year’s Caribbean Cycling Championships.
Long-serving BCU president and CCF vice-president Keith Yearwood broke the news yesterday in a wide-ranging interview with NATION SPORT, touching on a number of positive initiatives his council is embarking on.
“This is an event we will be fighting to put on and stage to the best of our ability because over 200 officials and cyclists are expected to be here,” reasoned Yearwood.
“What we’ve realised is that whenever we have races in Barbados we get a very good following from across the Caribbean, so we’re going to be ready as we’ve already contacted key personnel to make sure we’re all on the same page.
“We know that finances now are a little bit strained but I am sure that anyone coming on board will get the maximum publicity for their efforts,” he added.
It’s another encouraging piece of news coming from an embattled BCU executive, which has come under fire from some of its general body for a number of issues including this season’s lack of road races.
