From The Archives: Jan takes top spot

Jan Gibson is the 1985 Teen Talent contest winner.

For the second time in the history of the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Contest, a female contestant has carried off the top prize. Jan Gibson took first place in a close contest with Kenneth Harris as first runner-up.

There was a tie for third place with Lana Kirton and Kenneth Armstrong sharing the honours.

A packed George Street Auditorium saw the 15-year-old Jan set the stage afire with her dynamic performance of a song written and composed by the Mighty Gabby called Dance Baby Dance. She came back in the second half to resurrect the memory of late spouge king Jackie Opel with her rendition of lonely teardrops.

The Richard Stoute Teen Talent show, which is in its ninth year, started on September 1 with the first preliminary and up to the final preliminary on October 20, there were 48 performances.

This year there was an eighth preliminary to give the third placed contestants in the previous seven preliminaries a chance to compete in the semi-finals.
