DARYLL JORDAN SECONDARY School, situated in St Lucy, is the winner of the inaugural Sir Clifford Husbands Agriculture Challenge Shield.
The project is the brainchild of Sir Clifford, former Governor-General of Barbados, and has the support of the Royal Commonwealth Society – Barbados.
The prize-giving ceremony was held at Ilaro Court and attended by Sir Clifford, the High Commissioner of Canada, Richard Hanley, political officer at the British High Commission, Gilly Metzgen, Dr Anthony Kellman of the Food, Agricultural Organisation, Hallam Goodman of Carters Company limited and Dame Maizie, chairperson of the Royal Commonwealth Society.
In his address, Senator Harcourt Husbands, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, lauded the students of Daryll Jordan for taking the inaugural trophy. The competition was geared to get students’ ideas about agriculture that are innovative and fun and based on the Caribbean Examinations Council agricultural syllabus.
Dr Claire Durant, Challenge coordinator and third vice chairperson of the RCS – Barbados branch,
said it was up to the students to decide on their project as to what theme they would use.
“The purpose of the project was also to remind the students that agriculture was not all about the fork and the hoe. It is also about the veterinarian, food scientists . . . agriculture has many facets,” she said. (JS)
