Private doctors are putting in 14-hour days as they deal with the flood of people who have come down with the chikungunya virus.
And the volume of people presenting themselves to the Winston Scott Polyclinic is so great that the island’s chief medical officer is trying to get another doctor attached to the facility.
Dr Joy St John was speaking at a town hall-style meeting for health care, port and other workers at the Bridgetown Port yesterday.
Calling the mosquito-borne disease “a real and present danger”, Dr St John said she was getting reports about the number of cases on the island and the disease was affecting “a lot of people significantly”.
