OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Allen’s touching act of kindness

Thy life was given for me, Thy blood, O Lord was shed, That I might ransom’s be, And quicken’d from the dead; Thy life was given for me; What have I given for Thee? – Hymn 259 A&M verse one.

I was very touched when I read in last week’s SUNDAY SUN newspaper that billionaire Paul Allen of Seattle, Washington, United States, who owns the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, pledged to contribute at least US$100 million to the fight against the deadly Ebola virus.

To me it was a good human and Christian act, in that he was using his money (wealth) to help others during the crisis. This is what is expected of us – we must be our brothers and sisters keeper!

He is quoted as saying that he is trying to help: “I’m just trying to help show the way that we need to really increase what we’re doing now, because we’re currently chasing the expansion of the disease and we have got to get ahead of expansion.”

The Microsoft co-founder also said in the report that he was working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to increase the capacity for handling the logistics of transporting international aid workers and he is establishing a fund to cover the cost of the emergency transportation.

It is so good of him to be using his money to help others who are in dire need. Such a person must be complimented for his generosity.

I am sorry that there are some out there who can help and yet they will not use their money (wealth) to help during this crisis. The question is what are they going to do with all of their money (wealth)? For what doth it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?

It must also be noted that Allen also plans to give money to the University of Massachusetts Medical School and lab equipment to Liberian hospitals as well as community outreach and education in Liberia.

I do hope that those in Barbados and other parts of the world would use some of their money (wealth) to help fight Ebola. I do believe that a crisis like the Ebola would give a chance to wealthy people to donate some of their wealth to charity.
