TWENTY years after the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre began operations, the man who conceptualised the facility remains saddened that his plan for its use has not been fully realised.
Attending the 20th anniversary celebrations at the centre on Friday night, Sir Lloyd Sandiford told the Sunday Sun, “I had envisaged this as a centre for the cultural development of Barbados. Not all the purposes for which it was envisaged have been implemented.”
And though Sir Lloyd said he was “pleased” to have had the “very moving experience” of being present at the anniversary celebrations and to share in the activities, and that he was also “very pleased with all the care and attention and usage” of the facility, the fact that to date no accommodation has been made for a national portrait gallery and an auditorium for orchestras and performers, has left him with regrets.
“We envisaged that there would have been a world-class auditorium where orchestras and performers could do their work in specially-designed facilities and it would have been the home of the national orchestra and the national youth orchestra,” he said. “Those things have not been implemented and other changes have been made.”
