The tough economic times have had an adverse effect on businesses in the island. Many have gone out of operation and this is perhaps no more evident than in Bridgetown.
Once the major hub for commercial activity, Bridgetown has seemingly been stifled by stiff competition from out-of-town shopping centres, such as Emerald City in St Philip, Sheraton Mall in Christ Church, Warrens Shopping Centre at Warrens, St Michael and the Welches Centre in St Thomas.
Research indicates that in just under a decade, a large percentage of micro retail businesses have steadily moved out of Bridgetown. They have left behind many “For Sale” and “For Rent” signs attached to the doors and windows of once thriving stores.
The SUNDAY SUN recently visited the nation’s capital and saw first hand a plethora of vacant units, most with dwindling evidence remaining to suggest the type of business activity they once accommodated.
