The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is launching a “school of second chance” for youths with few or no academic qualifications.

Final details of the project are still being worked out, but NUPW general secretary Denis Clarke said yesterday it would be “a full-time academy” using facilities at the union’s Dalkeith Road, St Michael complex.

The plan reflects the union’s concern about the large number of youngsters leaving school inadequately qualified for the job market or for successful self-employment.

Clarke said the NUPW would be helping in “a critical area of our education that seems to be lacking, when children move at age 16 [from schools] and there is no further educational support for them”.

He said the union was hoping “to put things in place” next year with the help of principal of Parkinson Memorial Secondary School, Jeff Broomes, and director of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Development Unit, Dr Patrick Rowe. (TY)
