Barbadians can add eggs to the list of items that may soon see a price hike because of the increase in commercial water rates.
This is according to Trevor Gunby, general manager of Chickmont Foods’ Eggs Division, which produces 60 000 eggs per day.
In her Budget presentation on March 20, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that effective May 1, the commercial rate would move from a fixed $4.66 per cubic metre for all water levels up to 40 cubic metres, and then $7.78 for usage in excess of 40 cubic metres, with a monthly cap of 12 000 cubic metres, after which the rate reverts to $4.66.
She said the days of business owners paying the same water rates as householders had to come to an end. (TG)
