Oval battling ‘man grass’

Authorities at the historic Kensington Oval are in a desperate race to win a battle with wild grass – commonly referred to as “man grass” – to return the outfield to its pristine appearance.

The Sagicor Super Cup finals are slated for November 16 while the first home game for Barbados in the West Indies Cricket Board’s inaugural Professional Cricket League will be from November 21 to 24 against Jamaica.

An official at the Oval indicated that in the past spraying had been used to control the “man grass” infestation, but the growth had not been so extensive.

It was also reported that technical experts from one of the golf courses in Barbados have been invited to help.

In the interim, members of the ground staff at the multimillion-dollar facility have been laboriously digging some of the grass from the field. (KB)
