POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING an incident involving scores of young people attending $6 Tuesdays at Olympus Cinemas, Sheraton Mall, Christ Church, on Tuesday night.
The regular entrance fee of $16 to the mall’s cinemas is usually slashed to $6 on Tuesdays making it an extremely popular event attracting hundreds of mostly teenagers.
Police public relations officer Inspector David Welch told the DAILY NATION that lawmen received a call for assistance about 10:40 p.m. regarding reports of bottle-throwing at the mall.
According to a teenager who attended the event, one of the mall’s entrances was closed by security after nearly 100 young people, most of them boys, started throwing missiles at each other.
The teenager also reported that there was a fight outside the cinema.
When contacted yesterday, Ken White, managing director of SAFE Security, the company that provides security services to the mall, said the incident was more an issue of crowd control as more than 500 young people were at the mall and inside the cinemas.
He said there was no evidence of bottle-throwing.
He explained that the situation was compounded by two fights but mall security quickly brought the situation under control. (GE)
