ATTORNEY GENERAL Adriel Brathwaite has signalled his willingness to meet with members of the Barbados Bar Association (BBA) to address the challenges being experienced in the island’s judiciary, and seek out ways in which they could be improved.

He made this known during a courtesy call with BBA president Tariq Khan, vice president Sean Lewis and secretary Bryan Weekes, at his Wildey, St Michael, office on Wednesday.

“We need to sit as stakeholders so we can identify what prevents us from doing the little things needed to improve [the way] things [work]. Let us sit down and talk,” he said, noting that any meeting would involve the Registrar of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of Barbados.

During the visit, Khan outlined a number of challenges in the judiciary. These included issues relating to delays; a need to change the mind-set of those involved in the process in terms of how they collaborated with each other; a lack of implementation of concepts to improve the system; and “reinventing the wheel”.

However, Khan made it clear that: “We are ready to work with the judiciary because it is to our benefit.” He added that his association hoped not just to identify the challenges presently being faced, but also to highlight the opportunities that could be made available within the system.

The president further stated that members of the Bar took their roles very seriously, and would like to be promoted as genuine partners in the process in an effort to change how they were perceived by the judiciary. (BGIS)
