RESIDENTS of the Evalina Smith Children’s Ward are in better position to explore their surroundings both physically and emotionally following a donation of a new sensory place space by the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust this morning to the St Philip institution.
The equipment valued at $90 000 was handed over to the Ministry of Health under the care of Lolene Rawlins principal nursing officer of the St Philip District Hospital by Phillipa Challis a trustee of Sandy Lane Trust .
The ward and its needs were brought to the attention of the Sandy Lane Trust by Glynis Howard who has been its champion and volunteer for over two years.  She identifies the resources needed to improve the quality of life of the patients.
Challis said when she visited the unit last  March she was pleasantly surprised by the reception and cleanliness of  the patients.
“My first visit to the Evalina Smith Ward reminded me of something very important – when discussing people with special needs – actual age has no meaning  . . . a child’s mind can be trapped in an adult’s body. So with this in mind the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust agreed to help this ward and its residents regardless of age,” said Challis.
This brings the Trust’s total donations to the ward to over $280 000. (JS)
