Barbados team to Youth Olympics announced

BARBADOS are looking for even more junior glory.

An eight-member contingent, highlighted by standout swimmers Christian Selby and Zabrina Holder, is slated to leave for China on Sunday after being named to represent Barbados at the second ever Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

The full delegation was announced on Thursday during a reception at the embassy of the People’s Republic of China, where ambassador Wang Ke, Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley and other high-ranking sporting officials were on hand to send the team off to the Orient.

Selby, who is slated to contest the 200 and 400 metres freestyle events, and Holder (100 fly, 50 free) will be joined by rising young prospect Hannah Gill (400 free, 800 free) in a three-member swimming contingent.

The other five team members consist of track and field athletes, bolstered by Youth World Championships competitors Tristan Evelyn (100 metres), Sada Williams (200, 400), Rivaldo Leacock (400 hurdles) and Michael Nicholls (110 hurdles) along with Ramarco Thompson (200).

It’s the second time in as many editions Barbados will be represented at the major youth meet after the ultramarine and gold sent nine athletes in five sports (athletics, equestrian, judo, swimming and tennis) at the inaugural games in Singapore.

This year’s Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to run from August 16 to 28. (JM)
