Government has started to tear down some of the derelict buildings that are not only eyesores but unsafe as well as a health risk.
The first of 40 was ripped to rubble in Pavilion Road, Bank Hall, St Michael yesterday under the supervision of Director of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Anthony Headley.
He told the DAILY NATION that while 57 properties were down for removal, the EPD would be clearing the 40 in a sustained programme that would cost taxpayers more than $90 000. However, he gave the assurance that the property owners would be billed for all the expenses incurred.
Headley said some owners had removed the derelict buildings after notice while others requested a stay of execution. (SB)
