Woman next BWU boss

AFTER ALMOST 75 years of male domination, the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is about to get a female boss.
Two women, BWU deputy general secretaries Veronica Griffith and Toni Moore, will shortly contest the election to find a replacement for longstanding BWU leader Sir Roy Trotman.
To the general public, Moore may appear to have the edge since the Executive Council of the BWU named her last January as general secretary-designate, before it was known that Griffith had tossed her hat in the ring.
However, Griffith is a well-respected senior union official who has responsibility for research; Moore is responsible for industrial relations.
Moore was one of two people the council had short-listed some years ago as having leadership potential and pointed towards training, the other being Julian Hunte, who later left the company.
The election will be one of the highlights of the 73rd annual delegates conference of the union on August 30 and September 6.
