BARBADOS’ struggles in Under-19 cricket continued yesterday in Guyana.
The national Under-19 cricketers suffered yet another batting meltdown and were beaten by arch rivals, Trinidad and Tobago by 58 runs in their sixth round limited overs match at Everest.
After restricting Trinidad and Tobago to 204 for seven in their 50 overs, Barbados dramatically collapsed from 88 for one to 146 all out in 43.4 overs, losing their last nine wickets for just 58 runs.
Left-arm spinners Matthew Jones (3-43) and Chad Williams (2-31) led the Barbados’ bowling with support from lanky pacer Shamar Springer (2-38) after opener Jeremy Solozano gave the Trinidadians an solid start.
Captain Solozano top-scored with 56 while there were useful contributions from Camillo Carimbocas (44), Justin Joseph (38) and opener Amir Jangoo (26).
In reply, left-hander Nicholas Kirton (45) and Akil Greenidge (43) featured in a second-wicket partnership of 86 after the early loss of opener Leniko Boucher for one.
But once they were separated and captain Joshua Drakes was run out for 10, Springer was the only other batsman to reach double figures, scoring 16.
Akil Seetal was the most successful bowler for Trinidad and Tobago, taking three for 36.
Over at Albion in east Berbice, leaders Guyana stayed on course to achieve the league and one-day double crown when they marched to their fifth consecutive victory, beating the Windward Islands by 114 runs.
Guyana amassed 276 for five in their 50 overs with left-handed opener Shimron Hetmyer hitting the top-score of 86 and Keemo Paul making 51 before bowling out the Windwards for 162.
The Leeward Islands were also victorious, defeating the ICC?Americas by 150 runs at the National Stadium in Providence. The Leewards made 259 for four in their 50 overs and routed the ICC Americas for a paltry 109 in 25.2 overs. (EZS)
