Chelsea Tuach has made history again.
Barbados’ best surfing talent has now achieved the hallmark of being the highest ranked Bajan on the World Qualification Series (WQS), having moved up to no. 21 following a creditable 13th place showing at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6 Star Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro in California.
Competing in the largest women’s professional event in the world last weekend, Tuach advanced to round five before placing third in that heat behind WQS No.1 Silvana Lima and Nikki Van Dyke.
This was after she took down a pair of Aussies, Holly-Sue Coffey and Felicity Palmateer, in a dominant third round match-up that also featured fellow Bajan Chelsea Roett.
But Tuach didn’t end there, dominating the fourth round with a heat total of 13.17 against elite World Championship Tour surfer Johanne Defay, France’s Maud Le Car and Codie Klein of Australia.
“This was another great event for me,” said Tuach.
“My surfing is getting stronger and stronger with each event and I am matching up and taking heat wins from the best in the world.
“There is so much depth in women’s surfing right now and each heat is like a final so to end up 13th out of 108 surfers is a great achievement for me,” she added.
Currently the highest ranked junior surfer from the ASP North American region, Tuach is set to fly off to Europe next week to compete in two more ASP 6 Star events – the Swatch Girls Pro in France and the Pantin Classic in Spain. (JM/PR)
