Poultry producers?plan to protest what they say is the imminent importation of chicken wings.
Carlyle Brathwaite, president of the Barbados Egg & Poultry?Producers Association (BEPA), said that last Friday he received a text which stated “a willingness by persons to look at the idea of importing chicken wings to Barbados”.
Speaking today during a BEPA seminar at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Brathwaite said the importation of wings could be devastating to the industry as it had the potential to bring unfair competition to farmers forced to keep up with prices offered by international companies.
He warned that BEPA was closely monitoring the importation of “so-called processed chicken” which was continuing to be a problem for the industry.
Brathwaite said the association had been attending meetings with the relevant authorities to have the issue alleviated. (AH)
