Relief is on the way for thousands of residents in the northern, central and eastern parts of Barbados who are hardest hit by water outages and low pressure.
General manager of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA), Keithroy Halliday, announced the installation of boosters, expansion at Ionics desalination plant and the replacement of mains which should put millions more gallons into the network on a daily basis.
He was speaking during the fourth day of debate on the Appropriation Bill and Estimates 2019 in the House of Assembly yesterday.
Halliday was responding to a question posed by Member of Parliament for St Lucy Peter Phillips on water solutions for his constituency.
The island is currently in the midst of a short-term drought, and Halliday promised that by the end of this month and the next, St Lucy, St Peter, St Thomas, St Andrew and St Joseph should see a significant improvement in the service.
He said the Hope pumping system, which serviced St Lucy, went down on three occasions and the BWA had to rip it down, repair it and put in a return valve. It is now working, but he expected the full effects to be felt over the weekend. (SAT)
