Luke?Cardozo was poised to win the United Insurance Under-14 Chess Championship with two rounds remaining, after playing unbeaten over the first five rounds for a maximum five points.
The top-seeded Cardozo, a student of Providence School, has already defeated two of his main rivals in Niccoló Walrond of Queen’s College and Gabriela Cumberbatch of Harrison College, where the tournament is being played.
He was expected to face a big challenge against The Lodge School’s Jeran Coppin on Board One in what could prove to be the definitive point in the tourney. Coppin was on 4.5 points, having only dropped ½ point when he drew with Ntin Mahtani of Harrison College in the second round.
Before yesterday’s sixth round, Cardozo and Coppin were followed by Cumberbatch, Walrond, Rhema Weekes of Deighton Griffith and Cody Sargeant of The Lodge in a four-way tie on four points. (PR/EZS)
