increased competition in the telecommunications sector is expected to result in lower costs for business and household customers.
Senator Darcy Boyce, Minister in the office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for the sector, stated this during the official launch of Columbus Barbados at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Monday night. Boyce said he expected the introduction of the telecommunications company to result in lower cost of doing business on the island, allow businesses to compete more effectively on the international scene as well as result in better quality service and lower prices for household consumers.
“This matter of the telecommunications backbone is a very serious one. We in the government took the view that the easiest way to get the very best telecommunications was to encourage the competition,” he said.
“We now have three prime large companies who will compete with each other in the telecommunications industry here. I expect that all three companies will keep at the forefront of technology, all three companies will make sure that they give their customers the best value for money [and] all three companies will continue to bring additional capacity to the country,” added Boyce.
