When it comes to the special relationship that has developed between Canada and Barbados, people are the true winners.
That was the assertion made by Canada’s Governor General, Dave Johnston, who today met with a number of Government officials, as well as touring the Barbados Defence Force’s St Ann’s headquarters on the second day of his official trip here.
“What we are doing here, is just strengthening the rich tradition our country’s share,” the Canadian GG said during a brief press conference after he met with the BDF’s Chief Staff, Colonel Alvin Quintyne, and other regional security personnel.
“The friendship between Canada and Barbados remains strong,” Johnston added. “What we are seeing here is a symbol of strength and unity between the two countries.”
The Governor General said the thing that made him most proud of the friendship between the two countries, was that scores of citizens from both side had been able to earn special types of education through scholarships and other programmes.
“When the diplomacy of knowledge is shared, people are always the true winners. The people of our countries continue to enjoy positive relationships with each other, and especially through learning exchange. Barbadian students and professors collaborate with Canadian institutions through scholarships and exchange programmes, and Canadian students and researchers come to Barbados for an experience unlike any in Canada,” he said.
According to the Governor General, the two countries also have a special connection from a military perspective, and that would be continued in June this year, when Canadian military officers are once again part of the annual Tradewinds exercise staged by the Regional Security System. (BA)
