It will be a golf competition with a difference.
At a Press conference held at Sandy Lane Golf Club on Wednesday, president of Rotary West, Mark Thompson, announced the Inclusive Play initiative.
The initiative is a joint venture between Rotary Clubs of Barbados South and Barbados West, through which funds from this year’s Rotary West Diamonds International Sandy Lane Charity Golf Classic will go towards the construction of the Inclusive Play facility at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
The facility will provide a safe and secure playground environment in which special needs infants and children can play regardless of physical or cognitive ability.
Director of golf and player services at Sandy Lane, Elvis Medford, said the format for this year’s Charity Golf Classic would be the same as in previous years.
The tournament is set to take place on Sunday with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.
The event will feature a scramble over 18 holes with as many as 18 teams with four people per team competing; four drives from each player; and 20 per cent combined handicaps.
Consolation prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin will be awarded.
Marketing manager of Diamonds International, Simone Ward, said that in the company’s 11th year sponsoring the Golf Classic she couldn’t be more pleased with the Rotary Club of Barbados, in how they managed the event and made sure the funds went exactly where they were needed. (SM)
