WELL-KNOWN?retired race horse trainer Charlie Heath and his playing partner David Callaghan have reaped golfing glory.
The pair emerged winners of the two-ball/better-ball competition with a score of 49 points when the ?Barbados Golf Club hosted its annual season-ending Christmas Hamper Tournament for members last weekend.
The tournament brought out more than 80 players who enjoyed friendly rivalry on the Durant’s course and then food and merriment in the clubhouse.
Heath and Callaghan were three points better than Dave Barnard and Colin Brewer, who finished second, edging Hank Lucas and Alwin Browne on the count-back system. Fourth were veteran Helen Foster and teenager Iz Hustler with 45 points.
The winners each took away a cooler laden with an array of Christmas goodies, while the top 10 teams also received prizes from sponsors Super Centre, Diamonds International and Banks Breweries.
A number of individual prizes were also up for grabs and seasoned competitors cashed in.
Among the women, Helen Foster took the prize for the longest drive while Brenda Phillips was nearest to the pin.
In the male category, Teddy Grell won the longest drive, a tee-shot on No. 18 that was over 260 metres, while Peter Williams was nearest to the pin.
The tournament, which generally promoted enjoyment and friendly rivalry, attracted golfers of varying handicaps and professions and general manager of the Barbados Golf Club, Betty-June Leacock, said the annual event was a great success.
Leacock also thanked the golfers for their support of the club and various tournaments over the past year and promised that 2014 would be equally exciting with a range of tournaments designed for players of varying skill levels.
The first tournament in January will be the Sagicor General-sponsored Family Championships which brings out golf-playing parents, children and relatives. (PR)
