NUPW hope

Some 3 000 public sector workers may be hoping for a miracle over the Christmas season after their representative labour union met in cordial talks with the Ministry of the Civil Service yesterday.
In fact, general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Denis Clarke, said while he could give no details of the three-hour meeting that ended shortly after 5 p.m. at the ministry’s Culloden Road/Collymore Rock, St Michael office, the union had tried its best, and expressed hope for a miracle.
Clarke said he could not comment on yesterday’s meeting until he had met after Christmas with NUPW members, mainly temporary workers, who gave him several alternatives to layoffs last Thursday.
He added that he would report to them on how those proposals were received yesterday but acknowledged the short timespan between any meeting after Christmas Day – realistically next week – and the start of public sector layoffs due for January 15.
“Little miracles happen from time to time,” Clarke added.
