Men’s national champion Seanon Williams and arch-rival Russell Moseley will resume their year long battle when the annual Christopher Howitt Tennis Championships 2013 starts next Saturday at the Ocean View Tennis Courts.
Moseley is the defending champion, but it is Williams who now holds the upper hand.
Moseley had a superlative 2012, but this year, the titles have been elusive. He lost to Williams in the final of the Pine Hill event and went out in the semi-finals of the second event, The Courtesy, to Matthew Hutchinson.
Williams also beat him in straight sets at the Barbados Tennis Association (BTA) National Championships.
Competition is also expected to be tight in the juniors with Ajani King looking to consolidate his position as the top junior but should meet some resistance from rivals Hutchinson, Simon Lewis and Gavin Hutchinson.
The three-week tournament will begin with action in the open and senior age divisions, while the juniors will start on October 19.
One of the premier events on the tennis calendar, it will also mark the third leg of The Courtesy Garage Race of Champions which players have the opportunity to improve their standings in a year-long competition from four events.
This tournament, now in its 16th year, is also sanctioned by the BTA, so points will also go towards each entrant’s national rankings.
Players can enter online by visiting the tournament website at www.barbadostennis.com. (PR/SAT)
