Knockout champions, Flow Sentry Brokers Deacons women and Chargers men maintained their bids to earn double crown honours when the Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gym Sunday night.
Deacons’ women easily defeated former queens Freekz Customz Chargers 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 to move to 3-0 and a maximum 15 points.
But Chargers men had to battle for five sets to hand Progressive their first loss of the season 25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10.
Progressive had started the season with an upset over Deacons and on Sunday they looked ready to mete out the same treatment to Chargers with Akeem Payne, Reneir Grace and Fabian Cox getting great assistance from 6’5” Chioke Holder to pull back the second set after Chargers had taken the first.
However, big men Mark Lewis, Romel Agard and the high flying Damien Danzell exploited ground and net errors by Progressive to capture set three. After Cox and Payne exploded to take the fourth set and force the decider, Progressive then made a horrible start to trail 2-8 because of setting errors by Kemar Hinds and stutters by Payne.
Progressive never recovered in spite of picking up some late points.
The five-set fight was started by the Juniors who allowed Cawmere to rebound before taking the game 25-21, 29-27, 22-25, 7-25, 17-15, with Juniors Andriy Stapleton and Carlos Cyrus countering the fire of Shawn Simpson.Â
Coverley Medical Centre Deacons had no such problems in dismissing Foundation United 25-15, 25-14, 25-14.
Progressive and Deacons jointly lead the men’s table with 12 points each from 2-1 records. Chargers are 2-0 with 10 points and the Juniors, 2-1, also have ten.
The other women’s games saw Brydens Rockets crushing Club United 25-18, 25-20, 25-21, and Toners stopped RBC Carlton 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22.Â
Deacons and losing knockout finalists Rockets hold the maximum 15 points from 3-0 records, while the defending champions Warrens Jaguars are 2-0 with ten points.
