Government’s repeated failure to meet its local debt obligations does not inspire Barbadians to believe it can handle the current macro financial challenges.
This was what Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley told the DAILY NATION at a branch meeting of her Barbados Labour Party at the Lawrence T. Gay School in St Michael last night. She said the Freundel Stuart Administration had no moral right to condemn local individuals and companies for failing to pay the state.
The St Michael North East MP said she had evidence, based on judgements the National Insurance Scheme had obtained, that the National Housing Corporation now owed the NIS $8 million.
Based on court documents obtained by this newpaper, the 11 High Court judgements were obtained between March 2010 and September 2 this year and total $7 781 424 owed by the NHC to the NIS.
Additionally, Mottley questioned how the Government could be going after businesses that owed it, such as tenants who were having difficulty meeting their rent obligations to the Barbados Industrial and Development Corporation, when the state was now behind in its payment to one local entrepreneur to the tune of $52 million.
