While the world faces serious water challenges, some Barbadians still do not respect the fact that they were living in a water scarce country.
So said Minister of the Environment, Water Resource Management and Drainage Dennis Kellman as he addressd a church service this morning to mark the start of World Water Week.
He pointed out that some Barbadians continued to waste water and boast of taking long showers, even as some Caribbean neighbours could only get water two days a week.
Kellman said while he was pleased to report that 98 per cent of the households in Barbados had piped water in their homes with the remaining two per cent having access to public standpipes within a quarter mile of their homes, there was a need dire need to protect our water resources.
“Unsavoury practices such as illegal dumping which can pollute our groundwater sources, thus reducing the quantity available for human consumption must be stamped out. We have a quality product and we must protect it from pollution” he said. (CT)
