Songbird rises above the setbacks

Sometimes a beautiful smile can hide the most agonising pain, painful bruises and the dreaded feeling of hopelessness.

Singer Bianca Yearwood can attest to this. Her singing successes and failures may be publicly known, but her trials and tribulations may not.

As she sat down with Easy Magazine on a bright, sunny day, she spoke about her life. It seemed cathartic. She laughed a lot and was sad at times, but during those 90 minutes she talked freely.

Thirty-three years old now, Bianca spoke of being abused, married, divorced, battling numerous disappointments as well as a cancer diagnosis. She also struggled with weighing 170 pounds, and had her dreams doused and set on fire.

But like the late poet Maya Angelou wrote in Still I Rise, she says she continues to do just that.

Smiling broadly, she told of now being happily married to Shawn, as well as her two lovely children – Shanekia 14, and Malakye, nine. She misses her dad terribly, who lives in Switzerland, but stresses she is turning every negative she battled with into something positive.

She’s chalked them up to lessons well learnt and steps to where she really wants to be, which is a nurse. She intends to study and become one “God willing, even if it takes me ten years.”

She jokingly said that she felt like 50 years old, given what she has been through. (GBM)
