The Barbados Labour Party opposition has no beef with B’s Recycling plant but is more concerned with how Government handled the fallout from a fire at the plant last month.
Opposition parliamentarian Kerrie Symmonds stated this as he responded to Government’s defence as to why Minister of Environment Dr Denis Lowe was silent following the fire that destroyed tyres and equipment at the St Thomas plant.
Following the fire many residents complained about discomfort from smoke and odours.
Cynthia Forde Opposition Member of Parliament for St Thomas also lamented the lack of feedback from the Ministry of Environment and said the problem of discomfort existed even before the fire.
“The people of Silver Sands are not suffering the pain, Mr Speaker, of the residents of Reece Road, Cane Garden in St Thomas and the adjoining communities; they are living it everyday for the past few years but more so from March 25 with that towering inferno that sent off plumes that were more than 100 feet high and black smoke enveloping entire community all the way down to Holders Hill.”
The House of Assembly was debating a Government resolution to approve the compulsory acquisition of land at Vaucluse, St. Thomas for the expansion of the Mangrove Pond Landfill. (JS)
