Protest over marathon

BARBADOS’ PREMIER MARATHON might’ve run its course after the top two finishers failed to do just that.
Richard Kessio may have crossed the line first again, but the Kenyan defending champ and second-placed finisher Curtis Cox will be forced to wait until tomorrow to find out if their positions are upheld as the two went off-route in yesterday’s Nation Better Health Marathon.
It’s the latest piece of controversy surrounding the Powerade Run Barbados Series’ most gruelling event, coming just one year after the organisers questioned the event’s longevity due to a general lack of interest.
There certainly wasn’t a shortage of intrigue this time.
Former winner Pamenos Ballantyne and Andrew Gutzmore – who were third and fourth respectively – appealed their positions, having revealed to race coordinator Rawle Clarke that Kessio and Cox went straight up Highway 1 towards the turnaround point at Heywoods instead of turning left through Queen’s Street.
