At the heart of every family tradition is a meaningful experience. While this may be true, for Erica Hinkson her meaningful experience came in the form of saying no to a family tradition of involvement in law and politics and charting her own path.
Erica is the daughter of Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson, who is also a lawyer by profession. There are other lawyers and politicians in her immediate family.
So, as she puts it, “naturally, that was the path I was expected to take”.
“Hearing law all the time I became interested. I heard a lot about all the cases and found them fascinating, so from about ten years old I told my father I wanted to be a lawyer. Then I went into UWI Cave Hill Law faculty in 2010 and I dropped out after about a year and a half.”
Erica, 26, said she realised she just was not as passionate about it as she initially thought.
“I wanted to be passionate about anything that I did and I wanted the career I went into to back up things I loved doing,” she explained.
The thing that she ultimately loved and was passionate about was marketing. (DB)
