Akiel Alleyne has another dream he wants to tick off his bucket list that of being a captain flying a plane carrying over 200 or more passengers. Right now he is flying for Commutair, a subsidiary of United Airlines, that carries 50 passengers.
“My routes are like Florida, Montreal, and I did my first flight to Canada last month,” he said, adding he is based out of Newark.
Akiel, a former student of Luther Thorne and Deighton Griffith, got his first taste of flying at age 16. His father, Keith Alleyne, a member of the Light Aeroplane Club based at Seawell, Christ Church, was okay with his son learning to fly. Not so mum.
Blondelle Warner said she did all she could to discourage Akiel.
“I wanted him to be an accountant like me. I forced him to do accounts. But I was outnumbered two to one,” she said, laughing.
“He even told me he was going to join the United States Air Force, so I quickly signed the consent form for him to enter flight school and found the funds to pay for it.” (NS)
